Wegagen Bank has reported a pre-tax profit of 4.3 billion Br for the 2025/26 financial year, with total assets reaching 111.3 billion Br.
The figures were presented by chairman Abdishu Hussien, president Aklilu Wubet and director Woldegabriel Naizgi, who set the result against a new five-year plan pairing rapid expansion with stronger returns to shareholders.
A crowded field
The number lands in a banking sector that has been reporting strong headline profits across the board this season, and in which the central bank's supervisors have been busy — the National Bank of Ethiopia ordered lenders this week to stop crediting deposit interest before maturity, a practice its reviews found at some banks.
Wegagen's 111.3 billion Br balance sheet places it in the middle tier of Ethiopia's private banks, large enough to matter and small enough to be a candidate in any consolidation. That question is live: Birr Metrics argued this week that the country has spent years creating banks and may spend the next years merging them.
What the announcement does not settle
A pre-tax figure and a total-asset figure are the two numbers a bank most likes to publish. They say nothing about the quality of the loan book behind them, the share of profit coming from foreign-exchange gains in a year when the birr moved sharply, or the cost of the deposits funding the growth.
Open
The bank has not published its non-performing loan ratio, its capital adequacy position, or the branch and deposit targets inside the five-year plan. Nor has it said what share of the year's earnings came from foreign-exchange revaluation. Addis Fortune described the same 4.3 billion Br as gross profit; Wegagen's own announcement describes it as profit before tax.
