Nano Banc has become the sixth US bank to fail in 2026. More than 25 percent of its loans went bad, the bulk of them tied to commercial real estate.
A quarter of the book is not a shock, it is a concentration
A non-performing ratio above 25 percent is not the result of a sudden event. It is what a concentrated loan book looks like after the sector it is concentrated in reprices. Commercial real estate has been doing that for three years across American markets, and the banks that fail are the ones that lent into one sector hard enough that a sectoral downturn became a solvency problem rather than an earnings problem.
Six failures in a year is not a systemic count by the standards of 2008 or 2023, but the common cause is worth noting: they are concentration failures, not liquidity runs.
The read for Ethiopian banks
Ethiopia's banking sector is not exposed to American commercial property. It is, however, running its own concentration experiment. Domestic lending is heavily weighted toward a small number of sectors, construction and real estate prominent among them, and the National Bank's asset-quality work has been circling that question. Contractors in Addis are already publicly arguing about enforceable standards and who carries the cost when projects stall.
The mechanism that took Nano Banc down is available in any market where a bank's loan book and one sector's cycle are the same thing. The names and the numbers differ; the arithmetic does not.

The reporting does not identify the resolution route, what the deposit insurer expects the failure to cost, whether an acquirer has taken the book, or how large Nano Banc was. Nor does it name the other five failures of 2026.
