Meqelle Residents Are Buying Food in Bulk, Fearing the Fighting Will Widen

Residents of Meqelle have begun buying food and other basic goods in large quantities, fearing that the fighting which broke out on Wednesday could escalate, Reuters reported. The account reached fact.et through Tikvah Ethiopia's relay of the wire report.

Residents reached by telephone described buying "everything we said will be necessary". One, who asked not to be named because they feared for their safety, described trying to obtain or buy all basic needs at once.

The pattern this follows

Panic buying in a city expecting to be cut off is not a consumer story. It is the first observable move in a supply shock, and it runs in a fixed sequence: staples clear first, prices move within days, and the traders holding stock face a choice between selling into the spike and holding against a resupply date nobody can give them.

What makes Meqelle's case sharper than the general pattern is the corridor position. The city's two ordinary links to Addis Abeba are the northern road routes now described as contested and the air link, which fact.et reported on 24 September has been suspended by Ethiopian Airlines along with services to Axum and Shire. A market that cannot be resupplied does not stabilise on its own.

What is not known

No trade bureau, wholesaler association or regional office has published price data for the week, so the size of the move is unmeasured. There is no public figure for stock on hand in the city, and no authority has said whether commercial convoys will be permitted or protected.

The anonymity of the sourcing is itself information: residents describing ordinary market behaviour to a wire service are declining to be named.

No public body has addressed resupply. Neither the federal government nor the regional administration has published a plan for commercial goods movement into Tigray, and no humanitarian agency has yet issued an assessment for this round of fighting.
