Ethiopia Finished Second at the World Road Running Championships

Ethiopia finished second at the second World Road Running Championships, which ended in Copenhagen on Sunday, Fana reported.

The meet

The championships ran over two days and drew more than 450 athletes from 86 countries, according to Fana. The programme covered the men's and women's half marathon and the men's and women's five kilometres.

Fana's report gives Ethiopia's overall placing but does not break down which events the country medalled in, or on what basis the standings were compiled.

The record that was set

In the women's half marathon, Kenya's Agnes Ngetich won gold and broke the world record for a women-only half marathon, the BBC reported. A women-only record is set in a race without male pacemakers, and is tracked separately from the mixed-race mark.

Why a road race is a business story

Road running is one of the few sectors where Ethiopian competitive standing is unambiguous and internationally priced. Placings at a world championship feed directly into appearance fees, shoe and apparel contracts, and the standing of the domestic race calendar — including the value of sponsorship inventory at events run inside the country.

A second place is a good result. It is also a second place, at a championship where the neighbouring federation took the headline record.
