Fayda Is Now a Company With 10 Billion Birr in Authorised Capital

The federal government has converted Fayda, the national digital ID programme, into a company. Faydaverse, until now a public project inside the Prime Minister's Office, is a state-owned enterprise within Ethiopian Investment Holdings, with authorised capital of 10 billion birr.

The programme it inherits has enrolled about 50 million residents, connects to more than 150 public and private institutions, and has handled between 160 million and 190 million identity checks.

An identity system that verifies who people are is now also an enterprise inside a sovereign wealth fund with a balance sheet to answer for. Those two things are not in conflict, but they are not the same job.

Exports: $31.04 billion over five years

Across five fiscal years beginning in 2022, Ethiopia earned a cumulative $31.04 billion from exports, with annual receipts up 171.84% — from $4.12 billion in 2022 to $11.20 billion in the latest year.

Manufacturing is 7% of export earnings after five years of industrial policy aimed at raising it.

Schooling

In Amhara, insecurity across the Gojjam, Gondar and Wollo zones has left an estimated 4.1 million to 4.4 million children out of school, according to regional officials and UN monitors. In Tigray, between 1.2 million and 1.4 million remain outside active classrooms, and more than 85% of school buildings were damaged, looted or destroyed during the civil war.

Nationally, between 7.2 million and nine million school-age children are out of the classroom.

Forex

The market shows the birr in a controlled weakening rather than a break, with bank rates drifting from the benchmark and the spread between the highest and lowest bank above five birr. Whether the calm holds without another injection of dollars is the question the next auction answers.

Tax

The Ministry of Revenues segments federal taxpayers into Large, Medium and Small across 13 branches, six in Addis Abeba. The large segment's 746 taxpayers paid 522.67 billion birr last year, with 29% of them generating 80% of that. The branch targets 816.70 billion birr this year — 76% of the national domestic tax target, from 746 taxpayers.
